“…In this study we used VBN as a navigation mode in porcine solid nodules (fluoroscopy-detectable) and ENB in human pure ground-glass nodules (fluoroscopy-undetectable) and the results show that both methods could localize pulmonary nodules successfully. Whilst there was no difference in localization success rate between VBN and ENB in our study, the potential advantage of ENB may be that it gives real time display of the distance from the fiducial marker to the lesion, facilitating determination of the surgical resection boundary, although this needs to be further explored (27). Our results show that pulmonary nodule localization and resection can be conducted simultaneously.…”

“…such as CT guided hookwire or microcoil placement, virtual bronchoscopy and electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB), to tackle the challenge of intraoperative identification of these small lesions for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes (8,9). The rising popularity of the hybrid operating theatre has also allowed for the marriage of such techniques with minimally invasive surgery to provide an efficient operating environment for localisation and therapy in one single setting (9)(10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)-guided procedures are being increasingly popular, these include ENB biopsy of lung nodules, dye marking for subsequent surgical wedge biopsy (1,2), implantation of fiducial marker (3,4), and the promising novel technique of transbronchial lung nodule ablation under ENB and cone-beam CT (CBCT) guidance (5,6). For more complicated cases involving peripheral small lesions requiring transbronchial access, real-time fluoroscopy and CBCT is required to improve accuracy and confirm needle placement within nodules, usually in the setting of hybrid theatre (7).…”
