This article describes experiments on the combined determination of the distribution of liquid metal and argon in the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) and of the flow in the mold of a small-scale physical model of a continuous slab caster. For visualizing the metal distribution in the SEN, mutual inductance tomography (MIT) is applied, while the flow in the mold is determined by contactless inductive flow tomography (CIFT). The results of the latter are validated in part by ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry (UDV). Accompanying measurements provide information about the levels in the tundish and in the mold, as well as on the pressure in the SEN. Depending on the gas flow rate, various flow regimes are identified, among them pressure and mold level oscillations, transitions between double and single vortex flows, and transient single port ejections.

In two-phase (gas/liquid or liquid/liquid) flow measurements, phase holdup is an important parameter. Electromagnetic induction techniques have been applied for determining this parameter. However, due to inhomogeneous sensitivity of the conventional inductive sensors, the accuracy in measuring phase holdup is seriously affected by flow regimes. To overcome this problem, multiple sensor configurations such as MIT have been considered; however, the sensitivity maps of MIT are not homogenous and in addition, the complexity of a multiple channels measurement system increases significantly. In this paper, a novel spiral electromagnetic induction sensor was proposed. The sensitivity matrices of four different configurations of the sensor were calculated using MATLAB. Both simulations and experiments were carried out, which proved that the spiral style sensors have increased and more homogenous sensitivity distributions, making it more suitable for phase holdup measurement.

Abstract. This Minireview summarizes the recent efforts to solve forward and inverse problems as they occur in different branches of fundamental and applied magnetohydrodynamics. As for the forward problem, the main focus is on the numerical treatment of induction processes, including self-excitation of magnetic fields in non-spherical domains and/or under the influence of non-homogeneous material parameters. As an important application of the developed numerical schemes, the functioning of the von-Kármán-sodium (VKS) dynamo experiment is shown to depend crucially on the presence of soft-iron impellers. As for the inverse problem, the main focus is on the mathematical background and some first practical applications of the Contactless Inductive Flow Tomography (CIFT), in which flow induced magnetic field perturbations are utilized for the reconstruction of the velocity field. The promises of CIFT for flow field monitoring in the continuous casting of steel are substantiated by results obtained at a test rig with a low melting liquid metal. While CIFT is presently restricted to flows with low magnetic Reynolds numbers, some selected problems of non-linear inverse dynamo theory, with possible application to geo-and astrophysics, are also discussed.
