Abstract-We present a method of making low loss split-ring resonators for microfluidic sensing at microwave frequencies using silver coated copper wire. We show that a simple geometric modification and the use of square cross-section wire give greater electric field confinement in the capacitive region of the resonant sensor. We use a combination of theoretical analysis, finite element simulations and empirical measurements to demonstrate the subsequent increases in the sensitivity of these split ring resonators for complex permittivity measurements of some common solvents.

Abstract-Nowadays there is an increasing need for radically miniaturized and low-power atomic frequency standards, for use in mobile and battery-powered applications. For the miniaturization of double-resonance (DR) Rubidium ( 87 Rb) atomic clocks, the size reduction of the microwave cavity or resonator (MWR) to well below the wavelength of the atomic transition (6.835 GHz for 87 Rb) has been a long-standing issue.Here we present a newly developed miniaturized MWR, the µ-LGR, consisting of a loop-gap resonator based cavity with very compact dimensions (volume < 0.9 cm 3 ). The µ-LGR meets the requirements of the atomic clock application and its assembly can be performed using repeatable and low-cost techniques. The concept of the proposed device was validated through simulations and prototypes were successfully manufactured and tested. Highquality DR spectra and first clock stabilities were demonstrated experimentally, proving that the µ-LGR is suitable for integration in a miniaturized atomic clock.

Split‐ring resonator (SRR) finds its utility in various applications where moderate quality factor is required. Application areas for this type of microwave resonator include communication, biomedical, chemical, material testing, and food grading. Design is usually based for a particular band of frequency, dictated by its intended utility/application. A metallic cylindrical shield or cavity is used to enclose resonator for controlling environmental effects. Quality factor determines resonator's figure of merit. Resonant frequency, quality factor, and other output parameters are dependent mainly on critical dimensions and materials used to fabricate resonator and shield. Numerous models have been formulated to predict output parameters. In this study, variations in quality factor and resonant frequency have been analyzed for nonplanar form of SRR structure model based on parametric changes. Simulated and calculated results were analyzed for model validity. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine sensitivity of output parameters over SRR dimensions. Output parameters of SRR structure fabricated to operate at 3 GHz, was measured for experimental verification of simulated and calculated results. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
