Electroencephalogram and retinal vessels in congenital cyanotic heart disease before and after surgery.

Abstract: Ulcerative Forty-six cases of ulcerative colitis were studied in detail. By comparison with Western series, ulcerative colitis as seen in this region is a milder disease with fewer complications and with less severe changes on sigmoidoscopy and rectal biopsy. The disease remains limited to the rectum, sigmoid colon, and descending colon in the majority of cases.Owing to the high prevalence of specific infections of the colon there are difficulties associated with the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, and these… Show more

“…Down's), and half were examined under 12 months age so they do not represent the effects of chronic disease. A smaller study found that the most severe retinal abnormalities were seen with the highest haematocrit and that retinopathy resolved with reparative surgery . Several other case reports have noted various vascular changes and retinopathy in cyanotic CHD …”

“…Hg-indeed 1 of the 9 in this series started with a PaO2 of 35 mm. Hg and an active EEG, and we know that children with cyanotic congenital heart disease can be of normal intellect with arterial Po2 values in this range, though older children may show non-specific changes in their EEGs (Kohner et al, 1967).…”

“…6 More recently, subjects with coarctation of the aorta have been found not to display these findings because of early surgical correction of the cardiac lesion, implying haemodynamic aetiology of vascular tortuosity. 6 Similarly Crowe et al 3,8 showed that retinal vascular dilation and tortuosity in 14 subjects with cyanotic CHD decreased after surgical correction and seems related to the combination of polycythaemia and hypoxia. Petersen and Rosenthal 5 found dilation and tortuosity of retinal vessels to be related to hypoxia and polycythaemia and to be present in nearly half of the patients (42 of 83) with cyanotic …”

“…29 Ocular findings in CHD were not revisited for the past 25 years. In 1967, 3 1968, 4 and 1972, 5 three papers detailed, respectively, the ocular findings in 12, 85, and 83 patients with CHD. A prospective study of the ocular findings in a large series of CHD was undertaken to further define the ocular findings.…”
