Electrodeposit copper from alkaline cyanide-free baths containing 5,5′-dimethylhydantoin and citrate as complexing agents

Abstract: Electrochemical methods, including cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry, combined with molecular dynamic simulations are used to study the electrodeposition mechanism.

“…H NMR spectra of the gold electroplating electrolytes were employed to reveal that strong coordination bonding of DMH to Au( iii ) was present, and that [Au(DMH) 4 ] was the quantitative complexation structure. 23–26 In this work, a novel cyanide-free electrolyte for Au/Co–Au nano-multilayer electrodeposition was reported. The structure of Au/Co multi-layer coatings was characterised, which provided an experimental basis for the application of the non-cyanide plating solution system in preparing Au–Co overlapped coatings in the signal bath.…”

“…The non-dimensional plots under potentiostatic stimuli have been widely researched and applied in metal electrodepositing nucleation. [17][18][19][20] Many studies used non-dimensional plots to analyse the nucleation process under galvanostatic stimuli, such as Au, 21,22 Ag, 23 Cu, 24 Sn, 25 Zn-Ni 26 and Sn-Co alloy. 27 With the wide use of the SH model, further amendments were introduced for this model.…”

“…However, these baths have a relatively low current efficiency, so preventing commercial use. 5,5 0 -Dimethylhydantoin (DMH) has been successfully used in Au, 17 Ag 18 and Cu 19 electrodeposition and is a promising complexing agent in Zn-Ni alloy deposition owing to the large stability constants of DMH with Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ . 20 According to our previous studies, 6,21 the investigated new alkaline Zn-Ni alloy bath has a high stability and the ageing has little effect on the electrochemical behaviors of the investigated electrolyte.…”
