Electrode Reactions of Nd3+/Nd Couple in LiCl-KCl-NdCl3 Solutions at Solid W and Liquid Cd Electrodes

Abstract: The behavior of Nd(III)/Nd(0) redox reaction at a solid tungsten (W) and liquid cadmium (Cd) electrodes in the LiCl-KCl-NdCl 3 system at 773 K was analyzed by using a cyclic voltammetry. The Nd(III)/Nd(0) reaction in the solid W electrode was found to occur in two steps through the process of Nd(II) ion generation. As the analytic results of the maximum current value according to scan rates in the region of 0.05 V/s to 0.3 V/s, the Nd(III)/Nd(II) reaction showed reversible reaction characteristics over the who… Show more

“…Therein, noble metals with low fusing point and boiling point are often used as liquid electrodes for two reasons: (i) a high diffusion rate of Lns in liquid electrodes benefiting the recovery of Lns and (ii) the easy separation of electrode materials and Lns using vacuum distillation. In the past few decades, the recovery of Lns from molten salts on liquid electrodes, for example, Zn, [ 7,9,10,12–17 ] Bi, [ 5,18–21 ] Ga, [ 22–24 ] Cd, [ 25–29 ] and Sn, [ 11,30 ] has been studied, which demonstrates the feasibility of recovering Lns from molten salts on liquid electrodes. Metallic Zn has a lower toxicity compared with Cd metal, and the recovery on liquid Zn electrode is safe and environmentally friendly.…”

“…Ce in LM] are the concentrations of the chemical species. D R of Ce on liquid metal electrodes has not been investigated, but D R of U and Nd on the liquid Cd electrode are in a similar range, of the order of 10 −5 cm 2 s −1 [26][27][28]. Therefore, assuming equal values of D O and D…”
