Objectives. To examine the safety and efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients over the age of 75 years. Method. Retrospective study of all patients over 75 years treated with ECT in three hospitals between 1995 and 1997. Results. Ninety‐three ECT courses were administered during the study period. Ten patients (10.8%) suffered complications following ECT. The most common adverse events were prolonged confusion and hypomania, all of which resolved within 2 weeks of the cessation of treatment. Eighty‐five per cent of patients made a marked or moderate response to treatment. Conclusions. ECT is a relatively safe and effective procedure in patients over age 75. ÖZETParkinson Hastalığı temel olarak bir hareket bozukluğu olmakla birlikte, sıklıkla affektif, bilişsel ve psikotik bozuklukların eşlik etmesi nedeniyle bir nöropsikiyatrik hastalık olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Depresyonun da Parkinson hastalığında en sık görülen psikiyatrik rahatsızlık olduğu bilinmektedir. Parkinson hastalığındaki depresyonun tedavisine yönelik farklı yaklaşımlar bulunmaktadır. Antidepresanlar ve bilişsel davranışçı terapi kullanılmakla birlikte, yaşlı hasta grubunda özkıyım riski, fiziksel durumun bozulması, psikomotor retardasyon ve ilaca yetersiz yanıt alındığında elektrokonvülsif tedavi tercih edilebilir. Bu yazıda yaşlı bir hastada Parkinson hastalığı sırasında ortaya çıkan bir depresyon atağının elektrokonvülsif tedavisi sunulmuştur. ABSTRACTParkinson's disease can be defined as a neuropsychiatric disease which is basicly a dismotilite disease, often with affective cognitive and psychotic disorder. Depression is the most frequent psychiatric disorder in patients with Parkinson's disease.There are several possible approaches for the treatment of depression in Parkinson disease. We can use antidepresants and conitive behavioral therapy, and can be prefer to use electroconvulsive therapy in the condition that, the suicidal risk of elder patient groups, disorder of the phsical condition, psychomotor retardation and insufficient response to the medicine.ın this article, an electroconvulsive therapy treatment is reported, which is about a depression attact in an elderly patient who has Parkinson's disease.
