Electrocoagulation Process in the Context of Disinfection Mechanism

Abstract: During the last three decades, the electrocoagulation (EC) process has known an exemplary renaissance in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Several researchers focused on applying this electrochemical technology in removing diverse pollutants such as pathogens. During EC method, the coagulant is furnished via solubilizing sacrificial electrodes upon an applied electric field. The easiness of the technology and the side phenomena involving the generation of gas bubbles are the major advantages. This w… Show more

“…To completely take advantage of the electrochemical setup, cathodic phenomena (like the in-situ formation of H 2 O 2 ) may be combined with EO [1] [103]. When iron ions are introduced into the electrolyte [104] [105] [106], a hybrid setup consisting of EO and the electro-Fenton (E-F) [107] technique can considerably boost the oxidation efficacy (Figure 1(a)). Long et al [84] examined an electrochemical device with a BDD anode, and a carbon felt cathode for demobilizing M. aeruginosa.…”

“…For instance, in the case of an Al anode, following the aqueous pH, the electrogenerated Al 3+ ions could be converted into different monomeric and polymeric Al species [1]. Among them, Al(OH) 3 is the predominant species (Reaction (13) and Reaction (14), Table 3) that results in the production of precipitates [123] [124] [125]. Theoretically, the amount of metal ions liberated from the anodic oxidation is stoichiometrically linked with the number of electrons passing across the electrode [126] [127] [128].…”

“…Chen et al [34] focused on the influence of catalytic ozonation in a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) on the generation of single disinfection by-products (DBPs) [35]- [44]. They employed a biofiltration column to assess the reduction performance of biotreatment on DBP precursors.…”

“…In addition, the EC system required a smaller scale and lower operating cost rather than other oily treatment systems. Furthermore, the EC process has found an efficient pathogens removal [4] as well as potential toxic metals removal such as zinc, copper, and chromium. Large restaurants and households require an oil and grease trapping unit to separate the oil and grease content before discharging wastewater due to Thailand's regulations.…”
