Electrochemotherapy in the Treatment of Breast Cancer Metastasis to the Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue - Multicenter Experience

Abstract: Introduction: Breast cancer is responsible for more than 50% of cutaneous metastases. One of the treatment options is electrochemotherapy (ECT). It is an effective method of local tumor ablation through the application of electroporation. The primary objective of the study was to demonstrate a response to the treatment in our group of patients. Methods: Between February 2015 and October 2016, in 3 centers in Poland, 47 ECT procedures were performed in 38 patients with metastasis of breast cancer to the skin. R… Show more

“…When cell membranes are permeabilized in a manner leading to cellular death [10], it is called irreversible EP. Both reversible and irreversible EP are methods in different stages of development for treating tumors outside and inside the CNS [11][12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…Therapeutic options are systemic agents and/or skin-directed treatments. Radiotherapy [ 2 ], surgical excision [ 3 ] or electrochemotherapy [ 4 ] are indicated for thicker skin metastases, either as monotherapy or adjuvant treatment. For thinner, more superficial skin metastases, topical treatments may be useful, such as imiquimod 5% cream [ 3 , 5 8 ], cryotherapy [ 8 ], 5-fluorouracil 5% cream (5-FU) [ 8 ], photodynamic therapy (PDT) [ 9 – 11 ] and applications of miltefosine 6% solution [ 2 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…Most studies focus on the electropermeabilization of cells via high-intensity electric fields. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] More recently, however, the use of iontophoresis via low intensity electric fields 8 was reported in animal models [9][10][11][12][13] and in humans. [14][15][16][17] Iontophoresis enhances drug delivery by electrophoresis, the movement of charged drug molecules in the tumor's extracellular matrix surrounding tumor capillaries.…”
