Electrochemistry and XPS study of an imidazoline as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in an acidic environment

Abstract: The effect of 2-(2-heptadec-8-enyl-4,5-dihydro-imidazol-1-yl)-ethylamine on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in aqueous hydrochloric acid was investigated using weight loss measurements, polarization scans, electrochemical impedance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The inhibition efficiencies and coverage degrees increased with the concentration of inhibitor but decreased proportionally with temperature. It appears that the steric hindrance of the aliphatic chain on the imidazoline ring adsorpt… Show more

“…The structure of the rest of the molecule influences the charge density on the functional group [6]. Most common organic inhibitors belonging to different chemical families such as fatty amides [9,10], pyridines [11,12], imidazolines [13,14], other 1,3-azoles [15,16] and polymers [17] have showed excellent performance as corrosion inhibitors.…”

“…The pendant chain structure also influences the adsorptive capabilities of imidazoline; however, the adsorption ability of the head group should not change as the pendant group is substituted [18]. The presence of lone pairs on the chain allows the formation of co-ordinate covalent bonds, thus improving adsorption [19]. Further, the attachment of a polar group to the pendant chain will increase the hydrophilic nature due to the polar nature of water [20].…”

“…Several families of organic compounds, i.e. fatty amides (Olivares-Xometl et al, 2006 and2008), pyridines (Abd El-Maksoud & Fouda, 2005, Ergun et al, 2008, Noor, 2009, imidazolines (García et al, 2004, Martínez-Palou et al, 2004, Olivares-Xometl et al, 2009) and other 1,3-azoles (Likhanova et al, 2007, Popova et al, 2007, Antonijevic et al, 2009) have showed excellent performance as CIs; however, the majority of these compounds are toxic and they are not in according with the environmental protection standards. By this reason, in the last years big efforts have been made by the researchers on this area to develop new environmental friendly CIs (Muthukumar et al, 2007).…”
