Jatropha oil [JO] based poly (esteramide-urethane) coatings embedded with fumed silica nanoparticles were prepared. JO was converted to N,N-bis(2-hydroxy ethyl) JO fatty amide (HEJA) and was further modified by a tetrafunctional carboxylic acid(trans 1,2 diaminocyclo-hexane-N,N,N’,N’,-tetraacetic acid) to form poly (diamino cyclohexane esteramide) (PDCEA). PDCEA was then treated with toluene 2,4-diisocynate and fumed silica to prepare poly(diamino cyclohexane urethane esteramide) (PUDCEA) nanocomposite. The formation of PDCEA and PUDCEA nanocomposites was confirmed by FTIR, 1H &13C NMR spectroscopic techniques. The thermal behavior and morphology of PUDCEA nanocomposite coatings were investigated by TGA/DTG, DSC, SEM, EDX spectroscopy. PUDCEA nanocomposites were applied on carbon steel and their coatings were produced at room temperature. The properties of these nanocomposite coatings were investigated by standard analytical methods. The PUDCEA-3 nanocomposite showed good anticorrosion and physico-mechanical performance. These naocomposite coatings can be employed safely upto 200oC.

Corrosion protection for carbon steel by three waterborne styrene-acrylic latex coatings with different glass transition temperature (Tg) and levels of hydrophobicity has been studied by in-situ atomic force microscope (AFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements in 3.0 wt% NaCl solution. The AFM images reveal the micro-and nano-structure of and pinholes in the coatings as well as their changes during exposure in the solution, whereas the EIS spectra vs. time of exposure show the barrier property, stability and degradation of the coatings. The coating with crosslinking and high level of hydrophobicity exhibited a high barrier property and long-term corrosion protection in the solution despite of some shallow pinholes. The coating without crosslinking but having high Tg and high level of hydrophobicity also displayed a high barrier property and certain stability although initial changes occur in the solution. However, for the coating without crosslinking and with low Tg and relative low level of hydrophobicity, some dissolution and open-up of defects occurred on the surface shortly after exposure and the coating lost its barrier property rapidly in the solution. The reasons for the different behaviors between the coatings are discussed with respect to the crosslinking, Tg and the hydrophobicity level of the coating.

The reduced graphene oxide (RGO)‐encapsulated functionalized silicon nitride hybrids (f‐Si3N4@RGO) were fabricated from sodium borohydride reduction of electrostatically assembled f‐Si3N4@GO hybrids with the help of silane coupling agent. The waterborne epoxy coating with 2 wt% f‐Si3N4@RGO was prepared by a room temperature curing process. The corrosion resistance properties of the coating were investigated. In the f‐Si3N4@RGO/epoxy coating, the unique structure of f‐Si3N4 particles firmly embedded in the RGO sheets could effectively prevent the agglomeration of graphene in the epoxy and construct shielding barrier at the coating‐tinplate interface. The results showed that the anticorrosive performance of the coating was significantly enhanced by incorporation of f‐Si3N4@RGO hybrids to epoxy. This superior f‐Si3N4@RGO structure with its prominent dispersion could make full use of the enhancement effect of the different components and thus endowed the waterborne epoxy coating with good shielding properties.
