Electrochemical Reduction Behavior of Soluble CaTiO3in Na3AlF6-AlF3Melt for the Preparation of Metal Titanium

Abstract: Direct preparation of metal titanium from soluble CaTiO3 in the Na3AlF6-AlF3 melt by electrolysis was confirmed, providing a short route for the high value utilization of CaTiO3 concentrates obtained from the titanium bearing blast furnace slag. The solubility of CaTiO3 in the Na3AlF6-AlF3 melt at 1253 K was determined by the isothermal saturation method and the electrochemical reduction behavior of TiO32− was investigated by cyclic voltammogram, square wave voltammogram, open circuit potential and potentiosta… Show more

“…Structure optimization of graphite anode is also an effective way to mitigate the carbon contamination in cathode product [7] . However, carbon content in refractory metals is still too high, especially for metals electrodeposited from oxygenrich metal oxysalts (such as K 2 CrO 4 [20] , NaVO 3 [21] and CaTiO 3 [22] ).…”

“…Ti, V and Cr were obtained by the direct electrolysis of soluble CaTiO 3 , NaVO 3 and K 2 CrO 4 , respectively. [22][23][24] In fact, NaBO 2 or Na 2 B 4 O 7 as oxysalts was usually soluble in molten salts, 25,26 which provided better dynamic conditions than that of insoluble CaB 2 O 4 pellets during electrolysis. In addition, the sintering process to prepare CaB 2 O 4 pellets can be avoided.…”
