Electrochemical sulfide removal can be attractive as a zero-chemical-input approach for treatment of waste streams such as spent caustics coupled to caustic recovery. A key concern is possible decline in catalytic activity, due to passivation from deposited elemental sulfur (S 0 ) on the anode surface and stability limitation, due to sulfide oxidation under highly alkaline conditions. In this study, six commercially available electrode materials (Ir Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO), Ru MMO, Pt/IrOx, Pt, PbOx and TiO 2 /IrTaO 2 coated titanium-based electrodes) were tested to investigate the impact of the electrocatalyst on the process efficiency in terms of sulfide removal and final product of sulfide oxidation, as well as to determine the stability of the electrocatalyst under high sulfide concentrations (50 mM Na 2 S) and high alkalinity (pH>12). Short-term experiments showed that the catalyst type impacts the anode potential and the sulfide oxidation reaction products. Longer-term experiments under current densities up to 200 A m -2 showed a high differentiation in stability performance among the catalysts. Ru MMO was the most active towards sulfide oxidation with a coulombic efficiency of 63.2 ± 0.5% at an average anode potential of 0.92 ± 0.17 V vs SHE. Ir MMO was the most stable, preserving 100% of its original catalyst loading during the tests. The results demonstrated that Ru MMO and Ir MMO were the most suitable electrode materials for sulfide oxidation under highly alkaline conditions, while the need for establishing a good trade-off between activity, stability and cost still persists.

Sulfion oxidation reaction holds great potential for replacing kinetically sluggish water oxidation to save power consumption and simultaneously purifying environmental sulfion-rich sewage. However, it is still challenged by the insufficient mechanism understanding and questionable stability caused by sulfur passivation. Here, it is demonstrated that bifunctional Co 3 S 4 nanowires for assembling hybrid seawater electrolyzer that combines anodic sulfion oxidation and cathodic seawater reduction with an ultra-low power consumption of 1.185 kWh m −3 H 2 under 100 mA cm −2 , saving energy consumption over 70% compared to the traditional water splitting system. Unlike water is oxidized into O 2 at high potentials under alkaline water splitting system, experiments combined with in situ characterizations uncover the stepwise oxidation of S 2− to short-chain polysulfides and then to value-added product of S 8 . Density functional theory calculations prove that Co 3 S 4 possesses reduced energy barriers in the rate-determining S 3 2− to S 4 − oxidation step and S 8 desorption step, promoting conversion of short-chain polysulfides and efficient desorption of S 8 . These findings reveal the catalytic mechanism of sulfion oxidation and inspire an economic approach toward the fabrication of bifunctional Co 3 S 4 for achieving energy-saving hydrogen production from seawater while rapidly disposing sulfion-rich sewage with boosted activity and stability.
