Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Nanocrystalline Ti–6Al–4V Alloy Induced by Sliding Friction Treatment

Abstract: A nanograined (NG) layer with an average grain size of less than 100 nm has been successfully prepared on a Ti–6Al–4V sheet surface by sliding friction treatment (SFT). The electrochemical corrosion/passive behavior and mechanical properties of an NG Ti–6Al–4V sheet were examined in this study. A bi-layer passive film that consisted of an outer TiO2-rich layer and an inner Al2O3-rich layer was formed on either an NG or coarse-grained (CG) surface. The improved corrosion was mainly caused by the enhanced stabil… Show more

“…The largest pit with 75 µm diameter and 409 µm 2 area was observed for the SLM-processed 06Cr15Ni4CuMo steel, and for wrought 410 steel corrosion, a pit diameter of 95 µm with its equivalent area of 2015 µm 2 was observed. The SLM-processed 06Cr15Ni4CuMo sample exhibited better corrosion resistance than the wrought 410 steel due to higher E corr and lower I corr values [88]. Generally, the presence of Cr in steel imparts corrosion resistance by forming a stable oxide layer, and in these two samples, the Cr content was ~13% for SLM-processed 06Cr15Ni4CuMo and ~12% for wrought 410 martensitic stainless steel, suggesting good corrosion resistance.…”

“…For the wrought 410 steel, corrosion pits were formed at around 48 V, the pit size was measured to be 95 µm, and its equivalent area was found to be 2015 µm 2 . The SLMprocessed 06Cr15Ni4CuMo sample exhibited better corrosion resistance than the wrought 410 steel due to higher E corr and lower I corr values [88].…”

“…48 The outer layer of this film was rich in titanium oxide (TiO 2 ), whereas the inner layer was made by aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) layer. 49 The chemical reaction that took place during the oxide layer formation is represented in equations (1–7) respectively. 5052 During the corrosion tests, the Tafel plots were obtained within the potential range of −0.05 to −0.25 V for both 0 h as-cast and SLM printed Ti-6Al-4 V samples.…”
