“…There are three characteristic absorption bands of –SO 3 H groups that appear in the wave number region of 1020 cm −1 , 1250 cm −1 , and 1650 cm −1 . These absorption bands can be assigned to the S=O stretch, the asymmetric O=S=O stretch, and the symmetric stretching vibration of O=S=O due to the –SO 3 H groups, respectively [26]. The substitution chemical reaction took place in one of the four positions of the aromatic rings between the ether groups.…”

“…However, in the latter study, the low value of proton conductivity was accounted for the high DS, the inhomogeneity of the membrane samples as well as for the thin thickness. Indeed, Iulianelli et al [62] improved the quality of chlorosulfonated PEEK-WC membranes, founding a proton conductivity of 2.5 Â 10 À2 S/cm at 100 C and for a sample at DS ¼ 90%, Table 4. However, at lower sulfonation degree, DS w60%, the same authors found a proton conductivity around 6.7 Â 10 À2 S/cm at 120 C, making this kind of chlorosulfonated PEEK-WC membranes interesting candidate as an alternative to Nafion for high temperature PEMFC applications.…”

“…Indeed, all OCVs from literature are lower than 1.17 V, with Nafion showing the highest value with respect to pristine S-PEEK and its derivative polymer, S-PEEK-WC. “…However, excessive amounts of absorbed water may have negative effects on properties of the material, such as, high swelling ratio and lower mechanical properties. 12,30,37 The water uptake of SIBS is shown as a function of the IPA content at different sulfonation levels in Figure 6. As shown in Figure 6, water uptake increased with respect to the sulfonation level in the polymeric membrane due to the presence of a greater ionic domain, which confirms that larger interconnections between hydrophilic regions favor the absorption of water molecules.…”

“…Ahead of this development, several studies have led to a number of new sulfonic acid functionalized nonfluorinated polyaromatics and polymer materials, with the intent of either finding alternatives to PEMs or improving on already existing and functional PEMs. 12,15,46 In some situations, continuous improvements are made either by reinforcing perfluorosulfonic membranes with TFE components or incorporating a solution or solid powder to decrease fuel permeability. 4 There is also considerable interest in creating novel PEMs like styrene and its derivatives, because of its vast availability and ease of modification.…”
