Electrochemical Behavior and Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence of Star-Shaped D−A Compounds with a 1,3,5-Triazine Core and Substituted Fluorene Arms

Abstract: We report the synthesis, electrochemistry, and electrogenerated chemiluminescence of a series of star-shaped donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules. The star-shaped molecules consist of an electron-deficient 1,3,5-triazine core with three fluorene arms substituted with diarylamino (TAM1-TAM3) or carbazolyl (TAM4) electron donors. Cyclic voltammetry of TAM1-TAM3 shows that the reduction consists of one wave of single electron transfer to the core, while the oxidation exhibits a single peak of three sequential electron-… Show more

“…Triazine core compounds have attracted a great deal of interest in recent years due to their intriguing photophysical properties and versatile applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) [1][2][3][4], organic photovoltaic cells (OPV) [5][6][7][8], thin film transistors (TFT) [9,10] and nonlinear optics [11][12][13][14]. As a unique building-block, 1,3,5-triazine (TRZ) becomes a focus due to its strong electron-accepting ability, high symmetry and easy modification.…”

“…Bard and co-workers [1] have synthesized a series of starshaped molecules based on a TRZ core with three arms built with 9,9-diethylfluorene end-capped with diarylamine. The donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) configuration produces a strong photo-induced charge separation in the excited state, and strong solvatochromism in the emission spectra.…”

“…The HOMO energy level of neutral Yellow-1 (the degree of ionization potential) and the LUMO energy level of oxidized Yellow-1 (the degree of electron affinity) were estimated by CV measurements. The half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of the Fc/ferrocenium (Fc þ ) redox couple (0.06 V vs. Ag/Ag þ ) was used as 4.80 eV under vacuum level [77][78][79]. E ox (the oxidation onset potential) was found to be 0.61 V (vs. Ag/Ag þ ) for neutral Yellow-1 molecules and E red (the reduction onset potential) was found to be À 0.75 V (vs. Ag/Ag þ ) for oxidized Yellow-1.…”

“…From these measurements, we Ag/Ag þ in the PC, and 4.8 eV is the energy level of Fc under vacuum [77][78][79]. The LUMO of BQ was calculated from the equation [ À (E 1/2 À 0.06) À 4.8] eV, where E 1/2 is halfwave potential of BQ.…”
