Abstract: Fire suppression is associated with ST-segment changes among firefighters at low risk for cardiovascular disease. These abnormalities continued into initial recovery even though cooling and rehydration were provided.

“…As part of the data sources evaluation, nearly half of the papers [42][43][44][45][46]48,49,51,52,54,56,58,60,63,72,73,77]) indicated that not all subjects homogeneously completed all parts of the protocols. Concerning any form of reporting bias, most of the criteria were fulfilled and, weaknesses were found when verifying the description of withdrawals and dropouts in six studies [40,41,44,66,67,70]. Finally, the limitations assess-ment revealed that 16 out of the 38 studies [40][41][42]44,47,49,50,55,57,59,63,67,68,[71][72][73] did not describe the limitations and opportunities to improve their developed investigations.…”

“…Data show that firefighters experience a disproportionately higher rate of cardiovascular events (CVEs) and mortality than individuals in other occupations, including police and other public safety workers [5]. Although fire suppression is physically strenuous and provides triggers for CVE [6, 7], a high prevalence of overweight, obesity, and physical inactivity among firefighters likely contributes to CVE in fire service [8, 9]. Efforts to reduce CVEs and improve firefighter health have increased; yet there are limited data and guidance on cost-effectiveness of diverse prevention strategies.…”

“…Salles, Xavier, Sousa, Hasslocher-Moreno, & Cardoso, 2003;Straus et al, 2006;Topilski et al, 2007), with little emphasis on the mechanistic links underlying the observed prolongation of this interval in such high-risk populations. Given these observed associations between QTc interval and various cardiac and noncardiac conditions, one can accurately guess that this interval is heavily influenced by various systemic mechanisms, autonomic function for instance (S. Al-Zaiti, Rittenberger, Reis, & Hostler, 2015), and not just intrinsic cellular membrane alterations. Unfortunately, with the exception of heart rate, knowledge about the hemodynamic determinants of QTc interval is lacking.…”
