Electroacupuncture Stimulation Suppresses the Increase in Alcohol‐Drinking Behavior in Restricted Rats

Abstract: Background: Although a number of studies on traditional eastern or Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal drugs, have been reported, few reports describe electroacupuncture (EAC) effects on drug-and alcohol-seeking behaviors in animal models. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of EAC on changes in alcohol-drinking behavior in rats challenged with restriction and immobilization stress.Material and Methods: Male Sprague Dawley® rats (260 -280 g) were tightly hu… Show more

“…Yoshimoto et al reported that electroacupuncture at ST36 suppressed increased alcohol-drinking behavior in restricted rats, while stimulation to Shenshu (BL23, lumbar region) was ineffective. Furthermore, striatal DA levels in restricted rats with electroacupuncture at ST36 were found to be significantly increased compared with rats receiving stimulation at BL23 (22). Kato reported that electroacupuncture at ST36 and BL23 elevated decreased DA and 5-HT levels in restricted rats (23).…”

“…As evidenced, EA has been reported to counteract the effects of a variety of drugs of abuse, including morphine [6] and alcohol [7][8][9][10][11]. Because EA can suppress alcohol withdrawal symptoms [7] and inhibits alcohol-stimulated release of dopamine in nucleus accumbens [8], it was predicted that the application of EA would reduce alcohol intake in alcohol-preferring rats.…”

“…Ernst and Lee (1986) find that low-frequency acupuncture stimulation of ST36 induce long-lasting widespread vasodilation against cardiovascular diseases and diseases with hypertensive syndrome. Han et al (1994), Wu et al (1999) and Yoshimoto et al (2001) show that acupuncture at ST36 was capable of suppressing morphine or heroine withdrawal syndromes and suppressed increased alcohol-drinking behaviors in rats. At the same time, many researches have been done to investigate how acupuncture plays a role in adjusting physical condition.…”
