Electro-optical measurement of sub-ps structures in low charge electron bunches

Abstract: Electro-optical detection of THz coherent synchrotron radiation is a nondestructive method for measuring subpicosecond electron bunches or subpicosecond substructures on otherwise longer electron bunches. With a new diagnostic setup at the Swiss Light Source, which combines an amplified Yb fiber laser and a suitable GaP crystal, we demonstrate sampling as well as spectrally resolved single-shot measurements of sliced electron bunches containing as little as a few pC of charge. The single-shot measurements not … Show more

“…The crystal can be moved towards the electron beam orbit and was placed -for the data shownat a distance of ≈ 4 mm from the electron bunch. The quarter-wave plate and half-wave plate (see Figure 3) are adjusted so that the system is operated near extinc-tion [29,49], in order to obtain high sensitivity. The light exiting the low-power port of the beam-splitter is injected in a single-mode fiber and transported back for analysis in the remote photonic analysis station (placed outside of the storage ring shielding).…”

“…This also concerns FEL projects based on high repetition rate LINACs 3,4 and Energy Recovery LINACs (ERLs). 2 In part of the existing setups, the principle is to convert the unknown pulse shape into a longitudinal laser pulse modulation, [5][6][7] or a transverse profile. 8,9 If the laser pulse is chirped, then a single-shot optical spectrum analyzer can provide the pulse shape information.…”

“…This method is particularly efficient for single-shot bunch shape monitoring. [5][6][7] However the extension of these methods to high acquisition rates is strongly limited by the finite speed of available cameras (pixel readout rate).…”
