Electricity Powering Combustion: Hydrogen Engines

Abstract: Abstract-Hydrogen is a means to chemically store energy. It can be used to buffer energy in a society increasingly relying on renewable but intermittent energy or as an energy vector for sustainable transportation. It is also attractive for its potential to power vehicles with (near-) zero tailpipe emissions. The use of hydrogen as an energy carrier for transport applications is mostly associated with fuel cells. However, hydrogen can also be used in an internal combustion engine (ICE). When converted to or de… Show more

“…The engine performance provided by the load control strategy mentioned above is shown in the map in Figure 6, as a result of intensive research carried out on a single-cylinder engine at BMW [16]. This result was later scaled to the 12 cylinders case, for implementation in a demonstration vehicle.…”

“…With the use of cryogenic PFI, the peak torque is increased by 25% to approximately 12.8 bar IMEP at the same engine speed [16]. Furthermore, greater charge density while using a qualitative load control strategy results in proportionally higher IMEP throughout the engine operating range.…”
