Electricity management in the production of lead-acid batteries: The industrial case of a production plant in Colombia

Abstract: Electricity stands as the main energy used for lead-acid battery (LAB) manufacturing. This study introduces an energy management methodology to address the electricity consumption in lead-acid battery plants, improving efficiency standards. The "equivalent battery production" is introduced to define the energy performance criteria to be met in the different production sections of the battery plant. The methodology combines the guidelines of the ISO 50001 standard with the energy management framework for manufa… Show more

“…It is sometimes possible to obtain an Energy Baseline with a low quadratic correlation coefficient (Ʀ 2 ). In such a procedure, after carrying out a data analysis, if it is concluded that there is a weak ratio between the variables, then this is due to the dynamics of the process itself and, therefore, it is important to normalize it through the addition of other relevant variables that affect energy consumption [38].…”

“…As electricity has been shown to be the largest contributor to GHG emissions from PV manufacturing [29,45,46] and the carbon emission factor from electricity production varies significantly between countries due to differences in electricity origin, two countries that manufacture SHS components were assessed: China, the world's largest manufacturer of SHS components, and Germany, also an important agent in the SHS supply chain. In addition to GHG emissions, electricity is also a large contributor to the other environmental impacts considered.…”

“…Heat recovery is a suitable way to improve energy conversion efficiency in industrial processes and conventional heat-to-power generation plants [ 1 , 2 ]. However, most heat recovery systems are designed for medium- (200–350 °C) and high-temperature (350–500 °C) waste heat sources, and they are not suitable for low-temperature heat sources (100–200 °C).…”
