Aqueous electrolyte formulations for NiFe cells were prepared by using lithium hydroxide and potassium sulfide additives. The incidence of each additive on the overall performance of the NiFe cell was evaluated by cycling our in-house built bismuth sulfide based iron electrodes against commercially available nickel electrodes. In order to explore the composition space relevant to our formulations, a 12 replicates 3 × 4 full factorial experimental design was proposed to efficiently investigate the combined effect of both additives. Our experimental results suggest potassium sulfide enhances the performance of the battery. The role of lithium hydroxide is less clear but the evidence supports that it would increase coulombic efficiency to a lesser degree than potassium sulfide. There is a growing demand of energy from renewable sources; [1][2][3][4][5][6] however, temporary energy profiles and the availability of sun light restrict the use of such sources. Therefore, energy storage emerges as the natural solution to the asynchronous problem between energy generation and demand. 7,8 There are many forms of energy storage (compressed air, hydroelectricity, electrochemical energy storage, etc.) with the potential to store grid amounts of energy coming from renewables. However, any practical solution must be efficient, safe, environmentally friendly and cost effective.It is well known that organic electrolyte based batteries exhibit much larger energy and power density than their conventional aqueous based counterparts. Therefore, non-aqueous batteries has become the industry standard for most mobile applications (portable computers, smart telephones, etc.). Due to the flammable nature of organic solvents, safety measurements are of overriding importance when dealing with such applications. Implementing safety measurements to protect your laptop's battery is one thing, but securing energy for a much larger application, such as an airport, is a completely different story; in this case, the implementation of safety systems would be very challenging and expensive as well. This is no longer the case with aqueous batteries, where the electrolyte itself would reduce the risk of fire. In addition, the abundance and lower cost of raw materials required to produce aqueous batteries is another important aspect to consider.Essentially, NiFe cells are secondary batteries which utilize iron based anodes, nickel based cathodes and concentrated solutions of KOH as electrolyte systems. Abstract. The aim of the study was to determine the attitude of Polish society towards renewable energy sources and identify the benefits posed by actions that use renewable energy sources. A method of diagnostic survey was applied, conducting the study on the representative sample of 1067 respondents. The Statistica 10.1 GB program and the analysis of discriminant function were used in statistical analysis. It was shown that paying conscious attention to saving energy was the most important declaration of Polish society as the best way to save electricity. Polish citizens declared the use of energy-efficient sources of electricity, and in their opinion the greatest chance of use within the renewable energy sources had solar energy. In the opinion of Polish society, the greatest barrier to use the renewable energy sources is the lack of mechanisms supporting the reduction of energy intensity of the economy and the lack of policy coherence for sustainable development in terms of air protection. Additionally, the most important type of support that would encourage investing in the renewable energy sources is to raise funds from the ecological funds and European Union funds. The acquisition of renewable energy sources is highly influenced by the energy policy pursued by individual European Union countries, and the energy future depends on the political will and the capacity of societies to implement appropriate technologies.

Abstract. Lithuania, as many other EU countries, encounters key challenges in three energy sector fields: energy independence, energy sector competitiveness and sustainable energy sector development. Such situation is determined by historical and politi cal conditions, as well as by limited internal energy resources. In such context an importance of energy consumption efficiency pursuing country energy sector sustainability is highlighted. By implementing the longterm goals and tasks a country may seek to increase the efficiency of energy production, distribution and consumption, as well as to increase energy production from renewable and waste energy sources. The main objective of the paper is to analyze the efficiency of energy consumption, the factors influencing energy sector competitiveness and sustainability, and to assess the development soundness of the use of renewable energy sources in Lithuania. The paper discusses the main EU legal documents and their provisions regulating energy sector, analyze energy production and consumption efficiency data in Lithuania and reveal the economic effect of the use of renewable energy sources in Lithuania.
