Electrically induced light emission from proton-conducting materials. Protonic light-emitting diodes

Abstract: Water doped with H+ and HO− enables the formation of a protonic p–n junction, which works similarly to a typical, electron-based p–n junction, including light emission when electrically powered. Polymers provide mechanical stability.

“…Particularly, protonic (ionic) and mixed conductors can be integrated in logic circuits to mimic, register and stimulate biological functionalities. 45,46 Beside converting biochemical (ionic) into electronic signals, 47 they can be active components in bioprotonic field-effect transistors, 48 lightemitting diodes 11 and switching memory devices. 49,50 Therefore, understanding the role and the impact of mixed transport on the mesoscopic properties of bio-sourced materials is the underpinning to design and develop high performance (bio) electronic devices.…”

“…Recently, Langer's group designed and developed the first lightemitting diode (PLED) based on protonic conducting materials. 11 The active layers of PLEDs were assembled interfacing hydrated proton donor-proton acceptor (H + /OH -) Please do not adjust margins Please do not adjust margins conductors between Pt electrodes. Dowex-50 (Dx50) and two types of sulfonated crosslinked polystyrenes (SPS) were used as proton donor layers and Dowex-1 (Dx1) as proton acceptor layers.…”

“…This leads to higher intensity of the light emission with maximum at 750 nm, assigned to protonic system, and lowering the emission at ~850 nm observed for dry material, when mainly the electrons are excited. The provided electrical energy excites the hydrogen bonding system in water up to the energy levels of combination vibrations and overtones 4 . The presence of water is crucial.…”

“…On the other hand, we have discovered emission in the entire range of UV-VIS-NIR due to the excitation of protons in the protonic analog of the p-n junction (protonic LED 4 ), formed in water as a protonic semiconductor, appropriately doped 5,6 . Now, we describe the system (polyaniline doped with ptoluenesulfonic acid, PANI/PTSA), where electrons and protons are excited when electrically powered, emitting the light in different range, on a competitive way.…”
