Electrically Conductive, Tough Hydrogels with pH Sensitivity

Abstract: Electrically conductive, mechanically tough hydrogels based on a double network (DN) comprised of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PPEGMA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were produced. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was chemically polymerized within the tough DN gel to provide electronic conductivity. The effects of pH on the tensile and compressive mechanical properties of the fully swollen hydrogels, along with their electrical conductivity and swelling ratio were determined. Compress… Show more

“…Since then, the preparation of conducting polymer hydrogels has been intensively investigated in the past decade, involving cross-linking with chemical bonds or physical nodes (crystallites or aggregates) [27][28][29][30][31]. Besides, conducting polymer hydrogels can also be prepared by incorporating of conducting polymers with the host hydrogel matrix [32,33].…”

“…Therefore, it is important to develop a conductive hydrogel system that retains its conductivity at different gel swelling ratios and also displays enhanced mechanical performance. 10 The prepared PVA-based HPE shows a high proton-conductivity of 10 -2 S cm -1 , which may be considered as a result of synergistic contribution from SWA and triprotic acid (H3PO4). The high conductivity of the HPE is also aided by the large amount of water which is trapped in the polymer matrix.…”
