Electrical Stability, Emulsion Stability, and Wettability of Invert Oil-Based Muds

Abstract: Summary It is shown that the electrical breakdown induced during electrical stability (ES) tests of oil-based muds involves formation of a conductive bridge in the mud between the electrodes. Observations with an optical microscope demonstrate that this bridge is composed of aqueous fluid and particulate solids. Water is the key component, whereas particulate solids. Water is the key component, whereas the solids appear to be involved only as carriers of the water. Hematite is an exception si… Show more

“…A primary emulsifier (often a fatty-acid salt) is normally added to ensure a stable emulsion, while a secondary emulsifier (such as a polyamide) is added to ensure oil-wet surface of solids additives and cuttings. Note that both additives affect the emulsion and wetting properties (Growcock et al, 1994).…”

“…The ES value is considered an emulsion-stability parameter (Growcock et al 1994). High values of ES voltage are directly related to more-stable emulsions.…”

“…OBMs are water-in-oil emulsions that contain water, emulsifiers, organophilic clay, and a weighting material (Growcock et al 1994). The water phase is usually a calcium chloride salt solution, with a water activity (a w ) that is designed to resemble the a w of the formation.…”

“…The measurement and application of Electrical Stability (ES) in invert emulsion fluids is described in two seminal papers 9,10 . The ES Meter that is currently the industry standard, the Fann Model 23D Electrical Stability Tester, and the latest API Recommended Practice (RP 13B-2) are based on these two references.…”
