Electrical resistivity tomography revealing the internal structure of monogenetic volcanoes

Abstract: [1] Eruptive activity of individual monogenetic volcanoes usually lasts a few days or weeks. However, their short lifetime does not always mean that their dynamics and structure are simple. Monogenetic cones construction is rarely witnessed from the beginning to the end, and conditions for observing their internal structure are hardly reached. We provide high-resolution electrical resistivity sections (10 m electrode spacing) of three monogenetic cones from northeastern Spain, comparing our results to geologic… Show more

“…Other important results derive from this stratigraphic study at a more local and detailed level. The use of ephemeral outcrops, wells and boreholes (this work), in combination with results from the application of shallow geophysical methods (Bolós et al ., , ; Barde‐Cabusson et al ., , ), allowed us to obtain the volcanic stratigraphy of the highly urbanized – and, consequently, with a poorly exposed geology – area of Olot (Fig. ), thus improving previous maps (Mallarach, ; IGC (Institut Geològic de Catalunya), , ; Cimarelli et al ., ) that could not show the same degree of detail.…”

“…The eruptive fissures that controlled the volcanic activity in the GVF correspond to NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW orientated Neogene tectonic structures (Cimarelli et al, 2013;Barde-Cabusson et al, 2013Bolo s et al, 2014). This suggests that the ascent and eruption of the magmas originated at the base of the lithosphere (Martí et al, 1992) and was guided by the same regional fault system that bound the area's horsts and grabens.…”

“…Geophysical modelling techniques have also being applied to have an overview of the plumbing system of maars and their diatremes (e.g., Lindner et al, 2006;López Loera et al, 2008;Blaikie et al, 2012Blaikie et al, , 2014Barde-Cabusson et al, 2013). However, the main problem is that while many remnants of wellexposed diatremes and ejecta ring sequences exist, rarely there is a chance to examine a diatreme and an ejecta ring belonging to the same young maar-diatreme volcano.…”

“…Adapted after Dèzes et al (2004), and Petronis et al (2015). tomography studies of monogenetic pyroclastic cones are rather scarce and focus mostly on Quaternary volcanoes (e.g., Barde-Cabusson et al, 2013;Bolós et al, 2014;Finizola et al, 2010;Peccerillo et al, 2006), which contrasts to the weathered and partly eroded Miocene Zebín Volcano. All geophysical data were collected during several field campaigns in 2014.…”
