Electrical Properties of Ag-C Contact Materials Containing Different Allotropes of Carbon

Abstract: The paper presents the results of electrical tests of contact tips made from silver-carbon (Ag-C) composites containing different allotropes of carbon: graphite, vitreous carbon, diamond and carbon nanotubes. The contact tips were made with the use of powder metallurgy methods. There were investigated the microstructures and electrical properties (resistance to arc erosion and welding, as well as contact resistance) of the contact tips. It was determined that the type of carbon used in a contact material influ… Show more

“…However, it was reported that the addition of oxides lowers the thermal conductivity (TC) [1][2][3][4][5] while the presence of graphite degrades the mechanical properties. 1,[6][7][8] Therefore, the creation of multifunctional composed of nano-carbon reinforcement such as graphene (G) or reduced graphite oxide (rGO) may fulfill these unmet needs. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Nonetheless, the size difference between the matrix powder (i.e.…”

“…Silver-based composites have been widely used as electrical contact materials for several decades due to their outstanding electric properties [1,2]. Among them, AgC composites are most attractive because of their outstanding electrical conductivity, low contact resistance, good resistance to fusion welding, and excellent lubrication performance [3][4][5].…”

“…For silver-based composites with a reinforcing phase in the form of carbon, i.e. graphite, diamond or glassy carbon, a three-stage formation process, including pressing, sintering and repressing [2,3,14], is usually selected. Ag-C contact materials having density close to the theoretical value are produced using spark plasma sintering (SPS) [15].…”
