Electrical impedance tomography methods for miniaturised 3D systems

Abstract: In this study, we explore the potential of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) for miniaturised 3D samples to provide a non-invasive approach for future applications in tissue engineering and 3D cell culturing. We evaluated two different electrode configurations using an array of nine circular chambers (Ø 10 mm), each having eight gold plated needle electrodes vertically integrated along the chamber perimeter. As first method, the adjacent electrode configuration was tested solving the computationally simple… Show more

“…Spheroid position in this study is selected to optimize the signal intensity of the EIT measurements and to improve the image reconstruction with the adjacent drive method. To measure samples located at the centre of the sensor, the polaroffset current drive 43 or opposite current drive 31 should be applied to maintain high sensitivity in the central area. In future studies, optimization will be performed to automatically detect the position of the samples and choose the best current stimulation pattern to increase the sensitivity of the measurements.…”

“…Recently, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been proposed as a viable alternative for the nondestructive monitoring of 3D cell culture set-ups: Lee et al (2014), Canali et al (2016), Wu et al (2018), De León et al (2019), Wu et al (2019), Yang et al (2019). Indeed this technique is widely used for the imaging of internal structures of the human body, their monitoring over time, Shiraz et al (2019), and the diagnosis of critical conditions (Murphy et al 2017, Samoré et al 2017.…”
