Electrical Discharge Machining of Al(6351)–SiC–B4C Hybrid Composite

Abstract: Metal matrix composites are found to have many applications in the materials and structural engineering field. In this work, an investigation is carried out to find the influence of process parameters such as pulse current (I), pulse on time (T on ), pulse duty factor (s), and voltage (V) on the machining of Al(6351)-5 wt% silicon carbide (SiC)-5 wt% boron carbide (B 4 C) hybrid composite through electrical discharge machining. The individual parameters were analyzed with an objective to minimize electrode wea… Show more

“…During electro discharge machining of MMCs, the recast layer, surface waviness and blisters can be generated on machined surface, which are contributed by the ceramic particles removed by thermal spalling because of the plasma collapse at the time of pulse off [11]. Moreover, the surface finish is found to be relatively poor and the microstructure and mechanical properties are changed due to the high heat generated during the laser machining [12].…”

“…Thermal spalling removes ceramic particles and the surfaces of MMC generated from EDM have the recast layer, surface waviness and blisters because of the plasma collapse at the time of pulse off [33]. The surface of SiCp reinforced Al6061 MMC after machining by WEDM is full of micro-pores, shallow holes, micro-fissures, and drops of debris [42].…”

“…Seo, Kim et al [21] also noted higher wear when volume percentage is lower which is contradictory to the results obtain by other researcher [26]. Saha et al [27] [30], Manna and Bhattacharyya [31], Sivaprakasm et al [32], Kumar et al, [33] Yue et al, [34], etc. where the range of parameters and MMCs were different.…”
