“…To rescue cases that encounter problems in oocyte activation immediately following sperm-oocyte fusion, certain artificial activation procedures have been recommended: mechanical activation by a modified ICSI technique [8,9], electrical activation [10,11], chemical compounds such as strontium chloride [12,13], ionomycin [14], and calcium ionophores [15], and sequential treatment with calcium ionophore and puromycin [16].…”

“…In a previous study of Mansour et al, the fertilization rates were 68% in electro activated patients with severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) and azoospermia whereas the 60% in control group [12]. We also intended to evaluate the effects of piezoelectric stimulation on severe oligozoospermia patients' IVF cycles and couldn't observe any significant difference as our fertilization rate was 64%.…”

“…While designing our studies, we preferred the nonchemical activation method such as electrical stimulation [12,24,26] as chemical activation was shown to induce parthenogenetic development of oocytes [47]. On the other hand about 70%-80% of unfertilized oocytes after ICSI responded to electro activation and formed two pronuclei [24,36].…”

“…If sperm is not present an incomplete parthenogenetic development can be initiated, undergoing some abortive cleavages in the best of cases, but without reaching further development (CardonaCosta et al, 2009), or even the configuration of four well organized cells (Lee et al, 1999). In mammals, oocyte activation is routinely induced or reinforced by electrical sequences associated to somatic cloning by nuclear transplant, NT (Onishi et al, 2000;Okahara-Narita et al, 2007), intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ICSI (Zhang et al, 1997;Mansour et al, 2009), or in the obtaining of parthenogenetic haploid/diploid embryos (Elsheikh et al, 1995;Escribá and García-Ximénez, 2000). These set of techniques are nowadays of marked importance in regenerative medicine and/or assisted reproduction in vertebrate models and even, in humans (ICSI).…”
