Electric studies on polyvinyl alcohol with additions of magnesium sulfate

Abstract: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA; molecular weight 17,000 g/mol) with additions of several different amounts of magnesium sulfate (molecular weight 246.945 g/mol) was prepared by the casting technique. The dc electric properties of these films were measured in different temperature ranges and the activation energy values as a function of different magnesium sulfate amounts were calculated. The dependency of dc electrical conductivity dc at a certain temperature was found to fit the well-known equation dc ϭ [(1/R) ϫ (t/A… Show more

“…Thus, we suggest that the activation energy of 0.32 eV is the intrinsic value of PVA and is related to the activation of electrons trapped within the density of states tail. However, neither our data nor the results of [1,2,23] agree with the value e E a ¼ 0.44e0.55 eV that was observed in paper [15].…”

“…The graft copolymerization of varieties of monomers onto cellulose has been carried out by different techniques, such as irradiation with ultraviolet light, gamma rays, plasma ion beams, atom-transfer radical polymerization, 7 and by ceric(IV) ion initiation methods. 8 The ceric(IV) ion initiation offers great advantages of forming radicals at cellulose backbone through a singleelectron-transfer process 9 to promote grafting of monomer onto cellulose. However, the ceric(IV) ion-initiated grafting depends on pH of the medium and the type of acid used for graft copolymerization.…”

“…Grafted cellulose derivatives have previously been constructed with vinylic monomers by using a Ce(IV)-based redox process for the polymerisation. 60 To prepare biodegradable cellulose materials, we decided not to build up the hydrophobic part of the core-shell structure with vinyl monomers but with a biodegradable PLLA unit which can be achieved by ROP of L-lactide. Polymerisation was thus initiated on the free OH groups of the polysaccharide, as previously described for the reaction of 3caprolactone.…”
