Electric Line Tractor-Based Conveyance in High Temperature Wells: A Collection of Local Case Stories

Abstract: Texas and Louisiana are not typically thought of as extreme environments, but the Haynesville and the Eagle Ford do have some hot and deep areas that are being developed. High temperature environments require specialized, robust intervention tools designed to withstand longer periods of extreme heat. The industry’s definition for ‘high temperature’ ranges from 300°F to 400°F. Working in this environment requires careful preparation, as well as proven, reliable service providers and equipment. “…Electronic components using high ceramic and silicon on insulator materials make it possible for all electronic components to be able to operate at 200°C. The use of special seals and O-rings that are not easily deformed by heat can be used to prevent seal failure due to fluid intrusion and downhole hydraulic losses [38]. In addition, it is necessary to integrate high temperature and pressure sensors in the traction robot to transmit real-time downhole operation data.…”

“…The motors used with this system are single-phase AC asynchronous motors. The tool can be run at high temperatures over 350°F (Peoples et al 2014). The disadvantage is that this is also the most inefficient system.…”
