Electric-field switching of orbital order in layered manganites

Abstract: We have investigated the electric-field effect on the orbital-ordered state of eg electrons for layered manganites Nd1−xSr1+xMnO4 near the phase boundary between antiferro d3x2−r2/d3y2−r2 and ferro d3x2−r2 orbital-ordered phases. By means of a polarization microscope in crossed-Nicol configuration, we can distinguish these two orbital-ordered phases, and observed the electric-field switching between the two phases. This indicates that the electric-field can affect the directional order of orbital, and the syst… Show more

“…However, related behaviour has been reported in thin films of quenched condensed Al [31] and granular films of Cr [32]. One can also note the similarity between these phenomena and the electric-field induced switching of charge ordered-states observed in manganites [44,45,46,47]. In our system, the abrupt increase of the current and of the differential resistance means that several conduction channels open at the same time in the sample, which explains our appellation of "collective Coulomb blockade" for the observed phenomena.…”

“…(ii) An external load resistor in series with the sample is used as a current limiting device 4,[15][16][17] . This arrangement limits the maximum electric field that can be applied across the sample with a power supply of moderate voltage output (˜100V).…”

“…Different interpretations for these nonlinearities included depinning of CO state, 3 depinning of charge density waves, 4 or change in the orientation of orbital ordering ͑OO͒. 5,6 Indeed, nonlinear effects were subsequently found in materials without CO,7,8 undermining the interpretation of "melting" of CO/OO states.Recent reports tend to interpret the nonlinear I-V characteristics in manganites as the consequence of Joule heating due to large currents. [9][10][11] In the case of resistive curves with a maximum in R͑T͒, current localization on conductive paths and self-heating was suggested to explain the concomitant increase and decrease of resistance with increasing current.…”
