Electric Field and Thermal Analysis of 132 kV Ceramic Oil-Filled Cable Sealing Ends

Abstract: This paper reports on a method combining the use of finite element simulations and external measurements to provide preliminary condition diagnosis of oil-filled cable sealing ends (CSEs) without requiring downtime. Good agreement has been obtained between the predictions from the electric field and thermal simulations and the measurements on a 132 kV oil-filled CSE. The electrostatic computation combined with electric field measurements can provide information regarding the electric field distribution inside … Show more

“…However, detecting the signs of ageing for CSEs in operation is not straightforward. Electric field measurements on CSEs, although theoretically possible as reported in [7], need to be conducted by personnel specially trained for live line work. Unlike the accelerated ageing testing reported previously, visual inspection of the CSE internal components is practically impossible since the CSE shell is not transparent and CSEs are in most cases sealed‐for‐life units.…”

“…Thus, a model consisting of an NCS and cable end is established in COMSOL software to calculate the mutual capacitances. The materials and their relative permittivities are listed in Table I [29]. The relationships between d sp , r sp , and the mutual capacitances are simulated and analyzed.…”

“…The above studies show that numerical simulations based on finite elements can be used to analyze the electrical and thermal distribution characteristics of cable terminals effectively. The electrical heat distribution characteristics of vehicle cable terminals in actual operation are affected by leakage current [9,13]; however, studies on the heat distribution characteristics of cable terminals under leakage current conditions are rare. Therefore, considering the leakage current, exploring the thermal characteristics of cable terminals through multiphysical field coupling is more in line with the actual situation.…”
