Electric characteristic and cavitation bubble dynamics using underwater pulsed discharge

Abstract: Underwater pulsed discharge is widely applied in medicine, machining, and material modification. The induced cavitation bubble and subsequent cavitation collapse are considered the major motivations behind these applications. This paper presents an underwater pulsed discharge system. The experimental setup is established to induce and investigate the cavitation bubble assisted with a high-speed camera. Three aspects, including the characteristic of the discharge with different applied voltages and conductiviti… Show more

“…The shock wave generated by an HVEP will reflect and refract in water, and the incident wave and reflected wave will form a subatmospheric pressure area. When the cavitation pressure of water is reached, a cavitation effect will occur. , During the propagation of the shockwave from the electric pulse, a high temperature and high pressure can be generated at the moment of cavitation collapse. At the same time, there are a large number of cavitation cores in the coal seam.…”

“…Figure 5 shows the comparison between the current bubble profile and the results of an underwater pulsed discharge experiments published in the literature (Shan et al, 2019). Due to the difference in the size of the cavitation bubbles in the experimental study and numerical simulation, their collapse time cannot be directly compared and needs to be normalized.…”

“…While previous works have analysed the phenomena of cavitation influenced by an external electric field, these works employed different techniques for the generation of cavitation such as underwater pulse discharge, 26 and ultrasound induced cavitation. 27 The technique of electric-field assisted laser ablation in liquids (EFLAL) has recently gained prominence for the synthesis of nanoparticles of a variety of morphologies.…”
