The current anaesthesia information management system (AIMS) has limited capability for the acquisition of high-quality vital signs data. We have developed a Vital Recorder program to overcome the disadvantages of AIMS and to support research. Physiological data of surgical patients were collected from 10 operating rooms using the Vital Recorder. The basic equipment used were a patient monitor, the anaesthesia machine, and the bispectral index (BIS) monitor. Infusion pumps, cardiac output monitors, regional oximeter, and rapid infusion device were added as required. The automatic recording option was used exclusively and the status of recording was frequently checked through web monitoring. Automatic recording was successful in 98.5% (4,272/4,335) cases during eight months of operation. The total recorded time was 13,489 h (3.2 ± 1.9 h/case). The Vital Recorder’s automatic recording and remote monitoring capabilities enabled us to record physiological big data with minimal effort. The Vital Recorder also provided time-synchronised data captured from a variety of devices to facilitate an integrated analysis of vital signs data. The free distribution of the Vital Recorder is expected to improve data access for researchers attempting physiological data studies and to eliminate inequalities in research opportunities due to differences in data collection capabilities.

Electrosurgery devices are an important part of surgical interventions in the modern medical service; however the benefits of using such technology are accompanied by side effects like electromagnetic pollution of the hospital environment. As a consequence, the maximum admitted levels of electric and magnetic fields for general public and occupational exposure could be exceeded in some cases and the risk of electromagnetic interference with medical devices rises while implementing electrosurgery in the operating room. In this paper we address the characterization of the electromagnetic emissions from an electrosurgical device at different distances and determine the maximum field levels for different operating modes of the device with a monopolar scalpel. Also, the surgeon's exposure while performing electrosurgery was determined to be much higher than occupational exposure limits imposed by international standards.

The electromagnetic environment in a hospital is characterized in order to evaluate the conditions for failsafe operation of critical electronic equipment. Field strengths within the University Hospital Z¨urich were measured at more than 60 different locations in the frequency range from 9 kHz up to 10 GHz. To account for variations in both, time and location, 'stationary short term' and 'stationary long term' measurements over 24 h were carried out. The measurement uncertainty of the measurement equipment, calibration and measurement procedure is assessed. Measurement results are evaluated with respect to given immunity levels (EMC) and in-band interferences (EMI). The ISM band features a noise power density of -32 dBm/MHz while for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) there are different sub-bands with a maximum noise power density of less than -81 dBm/MHz. This suggests that communication in the UWB band requires significantly lower power levels than communication in the ISM band for equal dynamic ranges of the radio links.
