Elderly Person with HIV and Antiretroviral Therapy: Prevalence of Dysglycemia and Risk Factors

Abstract

Objective: assess the prevalence and factors associated with dysglycemia (diabetes and prediabetes) in HIV-infected elderly people.Method: cross-sectional and analytical study with 59 people with HIV and using antiretroviral therapy, recruited for convenience in two reference HIV hospitals in Recife (PE), between May/2018 and February/2020. The prevalence and factors associated with dysglycemia were analyzed by Chi-square, Fisher Exact, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests.Results: in the 59 old age the average age was 64.3 years and 66.1% were male. The prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes was 20.3% and 35.6%, respectively, and the significant risk factors were physical activity, coronary disease, and risk of cardiovascular disease in ten years, HDL cholesterol levels and glycemia. Conclusion:High prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes was observed in elderly people with HIV. Interventions aimed at elderly people with HIV and risk of diabetes and prediabetes, especially sedentary, with relevant cardiovascular risk and biochemical changes that participate in metabolic syndrome, are necessary.
