Elbow arthroplasty research methods, outcome domains, and instruments used in clinical outcome studies

Abstract: Aims Arthroplasties of the elbow, including total elbow arthroplasty, radial head arthroplasty, distal humeral hemiarthroplasty, and radiocapitellar arthroplasty, are rarely undertaken. This scoping review aims to outline the current research in this area to inform the development of future research. Methods A scoping review was undertaken adhering to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines using Medline, Embase, CENTRAL, and trial registries, limited to studies published between 1 January 1990 and 7 February 2… Show more

“…We focused on failure of TEA leading to revision surgery due to the lack of standardized core outcomes in elbow arthroplasty surgery. 50 However, the Core Outcome Domains - Elbow Replacement (CODER) is an ongoing research project aiming to define these domains. This will provide further opportunities for research which can be summarized in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.…”

“…This scoping review from a team in York (UK) aimed to quantify the quality of the current literature for elbow arthroplasty, a definition which includes TEA, as well as radial head arthroplasty, distal humeral hemiarthroplasty, and radiocapitellar arthroplasty, in order to inform the design of future research in this area. 4 A review of the literature was performed from January 1990 to February 2021, and included a range of study designs that involved over ten patients reporting on the clinical outcomes of elbow arthroplasty. They found 362 studies that met their inclusion criteria and, as expected, TEA was the most commonly reported procedure, occurring in 246 cases (68%) of the cohort.…”
