Elastin Gene Expression in Blepharochalasis

Abstract: Blepharochalasis is a rare condition characterized by recurrent episodes of eyelid edema lead to an atrophic eyelid skin with fine wrinkles and peculiar bronze discoloration. A 32-year-old female presented with loose and redundant skin of the bilateral eyelids. We diagnosed her disease as blepharochalasis by clinical features and by disappearance of elastic fibers from the dermis in the biopsied specimen. Because elastic fibers diminish in the late phase of blepharochalasis, we performed RT-PCR to analyze the … Show more

“…As reported previously, in the late stage of the condition, the loss of elastic bers in the dermis leads to reduced elasticity, and is considered to be a cause of manifestation of blepharochalasis [12,13]. As the eyelids gradually lose their elasticity, some other manifestations would show up, such as thinned and wrinkled eyelids, ptosis, lacrimal gland prolapse, lids retraction, horizontally shortened palpebral ssure or rounded deformity of the lateral canthal angle.…”

“…The loss of elastic fibers in the dermis leading to the reduced elasticity is considered to be a cause of blepharochalasis. Kaneoya et al . reported that elastin mRNA expression in the patient's cultured fibroblasts was not decreased compared with that in control fibroblasts, suggesting that environmental factors or other matrix components of elastic fibers may be involved in the loss of elastic fibers.…”

“…Recently, we reported a patient with localized acquired cutis laxa, known as idiopathic lid laxity or as blepharochalasis, which is closely related to primary anetoderma (6). Although elastic fibers had disappeared from the lesional dermis, the dermal fibroblasts from the patient recovered the normal expression level of elastin mRNA after transfer to culture conditions.…”
