Elastic wave validation of large concrete structures repaired by means of cement grouting

Abstract: Injection of repair agent (grout) into boreholes is a repair technique commonly applied to deteriorated concrete structures, ensuring that interconnected cracks and voids are eliminated. The repair effect is evaluated from the increase in the pulse velocity between before and after grouting. Measured velocities after grouting, however, unexpectedly led to a remarkable decrease in the case of a 70-year old dam. This resulted in a doubt about the efficiency of repair. Through investigation, it was concluded that… Show more

“…Aggelis and Shiotani visualized a crack and confirmed the effectiveness of repair in two-dimensional analysis [2]. Shiotani et al applied the technique for soundness evaluation of concrete piers of water intake facility by carrying out a series of large-scale measurements [3]. For the elastic wave tomography, the velocity distribution is reconstructed by identification techniques such as Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Technique (SIRT).…”

“…In AE tomography, past reports can be found in literatures [1] and [2]; however, as they did not consider diversion of wave propagation paths (hereafter referred to as ray paths), few successful results can be obtained. In consideration of the diversion of the ray paths, the basic analytical procedure and the applicability of these techniques have already been reported as elastic-wave tomography [3] and AE tomography [4] by authors.…”

“…Seismic tomography is originally developed for the exploration of underground resources, and then recently applied for the soundness investigation of concrete structures (Shiotani et al, 2009). The author has been studied for the method of seismic tomography for soundness investigation of concrete structures of irregular shape.…”
