Elastic-wave-based synthetic aperture focusing technique imaging system for detecting voids inside concrete structures

Abstract: In this paper, an elastic-wave-based imaging system was proposed for adopting synthetic aperture focusing technique to reveal the voids inside concrete structures. Design concept of each component in this system, including an impact source generator, a transducer, a signal capturing unit, and operation software, is clearly described. Relation between contact time and impact source selection was discussed and verified by an experiment of steel ball free-falling on a concrete specimen. A displacement transducer … Show more

“…Lower frequencies between 1 and 100 kHz can also be utilised. 94 Transducers which can operate in such frequency ranges may be constructed through processes such as the Piezomumps™ process by Memscape™. This process is specifically designed to produce piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTS) and micro actuators.…”

“…The UT method is a commonly used NDT technique and has shown great potential for structural health monitoring (SHM). Damage imaging methods based on elastic waves are multifarious, such as synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) [16,17], total focusing method (TFM) [18], ultrasonic phased array [19], reverse time migration (RTM) [20], and ultrasonic tomography [21].…”
