Article Highlights • Broken honeycomb-like perlite structure as catalyst support • Morphological, textural, and structural characteristics of Ni and Mg influence • Correlation between reducibility and hydrogen chemisorption • Evaluation of lowest reduction temperature for catalyst preparation • Catalyst behavior due to Ni and Mg influence in hydrogenation process Abstract Use of broken honeycomb-like expanded perlite as support for magnesium modified nickel catalysts in process of partial hydrogenation of sunflower oil was studied. By the use of the precipitation-deposition method, two groups of precursors were synthesized: different Ni/SiO 2 mole ratios with constant Mg/Ni mole ratio 0.1, and different Mg/Ni mole ratios with constant Ni/SiO 2 mole ratio 0.25. Characterizations of precursors were done (scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance UV-Vis, infrared spectroscopy, N 2-physisorption, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and He-pycnometry) to determine the material differences, considering the change in morphology, structure, texture and reducibility with overall Ni and Mg content. In addition, TPR and hydrogen chemisorption were performed in order to estimate the temperature reduction range of supported precursors and the dispersion degree of nickel in reduced precursors, respectively. The interaction between Ni 2+ and perlite support was established. Different reducibility and dispersion were obtained as a function of Ni/SiO 2 and Mg/Ni mole ratios. After the precursor's reduction and paraffin oil impregnation, the obtained catalysts were tested in a sunflower oil hydrogenation reaction. Catalyst activity was monitored through the decrease of the refractive index and hydrogen consumption that gave the insight that the influence on catalyst activity represents the accessibility of triacylglycerols and not always the hydrogen determined dispersion degree.

Four different minerals were investigated; hollow spheres of calcium carbonate, platy mica, needle like wollastonite and glassy perlite and characterized via iGC for surface energy, Freeman powder rheology for flow characterization, cyclic uniaxial die compaction for modulus of elasticity and frequency dependent sound absorption properties. Particle surface energy and particle shape strongly affected the packing density of powder beds. In the case of higher porosity and thus lower bulk density, the powders acoustic absorption was higher in comparison with higher packing density materials. Surface energy profiles and surface energy distributions revealed clear convergence with powder rheology data, where the character of the powder flow at defined consolidation stresses was mirroring either the high cohesion powders properties connected with the high surface energy or powder free flowing characteristics, as reflected in low cohesion of the powder matrix.

In this study, polyphenylene sulphide was used as a matrix material due to its superior engineering properties. Expanded perlite is formed substantially from silica oxides, and it is a volcanic based and porous structure material. Its low price and low density make it very usable as a filler material. For this reason, expanded perlite reinforced polyphenylene sulphide matrix composites were prepared at various weight ratios (0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt%). Mechanical and tribological characterizations were done with tensile tests, hardness measurements, solid particle erosion, ball on disc, and scratch tests. According to the tensile test results, a synergistic effect was observed in mechanical properties by using perlite as a reinforcing agent. As expected, perlite reinforcement resulted in an increase in the modulus of 54% in composites. As well as tensile strength of the composite increased by approximately 13%. Furthermore, the perlite particle reinforcement improved the adhesion resistance by 73% and the scratch resistance by 30%. On the other hand, especially at low impact angles, perlite particle reinforcement decreased the erosive wear resistance of the pure polyphenylene sulphide polymer by 50%. Furthermore, expanded perlite reinforcement decreased the plastic deformation ability of polyphenylene sulphide. In consequence of this study, it has been found that expanded perlite particles can be used as an alternative filler instead of conventional reinforcing particles.
