“…Across the resonance, the line shape is strongly affected by the quenching of the vibrational broadening as the line width approaches 1s . The results observed here in CH 3 Cl at high resolution, i.e., dispersive/ non-dispersive behavior and broadening/narrowing of the K α lines depending on the detuning, are similar to those already observed in HCl 13 and DCl, 14 confirming the general character of these features in molecular RIXS.…”

“…As recently demonstrated in free HCl molecules, the lifetime of the core-excited state can be used to probe the nuclear motion and give indirect access to timeresolved spectroscopy in the sub-femtosecond domain. 13,14 Furthermore, measuring the K α emission lines (also known as KL transition, we use here the historical notation K α ) for different angles θ between the incident polarization and the outgoing polarization, linear dichroism has been observed in several molecules. Variations of the spin-orbit ratio (2p 3/2 : 2p 1/2 ) with θ , observed in both HCl and CF 3 Cl, have been interpreted as due to molecular field effects, including singlettriplet exchange, 15,16 affecting the molecular core-levels.…”

“…The energy resolution of the photon beam was 0.5 eV. 19 The presented branching ratios were measured with a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer operated in the space focusing mode, 20 under conditions similar to our previous experimental setup. 21 The total distance traveled by the ions was about 8 cm.…”

“…After pioneering work in the early 1990s on polarized x-ray emission in the gas phase, 1,2 resonant x-ray Raman scattering ͑RXRS͒ of isolated atoms and molecules in the so-called tender x-ray range ͑2-10 keV͒ has recently attracted a growing interest as can be seen from recent papers. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Instrumental resolving powers available today make it possible to perform RXRS spectroscopy with an energy resolution better than the inner-hole lifetime broadening, in the so-called Raman regime. Moreover it has been shown that RXRS may be used to perform time-resolved spectroscopy, where a characteristic time is introduced by the inner-hole lifetime of the intermediate state.…”

“…Moreover it has been shown that RXRS may be used to perform time-resolved spectroscopy, where a characteristic time is introduced by the inner-hole lifetime of the intermediate state. 10 This has been applied to the study of femtosecond nuclear dynamics, 3,5 which has been successfully observed following excitation along the dissociative Cl 1s → 6 ‫ء‬ resonance of gas-phase HCl molecules. These results show RXRS spectra are sensitive to nuclear motion of a few picometers within the short core-hole lifetime ͑ϳ1f sa tC lK edge͒.…”
