We present measurements of the complete set of third-order elastic constants ͑TOEC͒ of Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Al-Be shape-memory alloys, as functions of temperature. These data quantify the elastic anharmonic behavior of these alloys on approaching their martensitic transformation. We provide experimental evidence that the martensitic transition in Cu-based shape-memory alloys occurs at a fixed value ͑Ӎ60 GPa͒ of the TOEC combination C 3 ϭ(1/8))(3C 112 Ϫ2C 123 ϪC 111 ), which is the relevant combination for the shear mechanisms leading the bcc structure to the close-packed martensite. By means of a Landau model for elastic phase transitions, the value of C 3 has been estimated from the crystal structure of the martensitic phase. The value obtained conforms reasonably with that found experimentally. ͓S0163-1829͑99͒04001-1͔

The temperature dependence of the sound velocities for 13 propagation modes has been measured in a single crystal of Cu-Zn-Al monoclinic 18R martensite, using the pulse-echo method. By numerical procedure the complete set of nine second-order adiabatic elastic constants (C i j ) of the closest orthorhombic reference phase, their relative thermal variation (⌫ i j ), and the Debye temperature ( D ) have been obtained. The values found in the martensitic phase have been compared to data avalaible for the high-temperature bcc ␤-phase in the same alloy system. The velocity surfaces in the corresponding crystallographic directions of both phases have also been computed at different temperatures. It has been shown that the mechanical stability of the lattice for some particular distortions decreases as the transformation temperature is approached in both the martensitic as well as in the ␤ phase. ͓S0163-1829͑97͒07033-1͔

A quantitative evaluation of the dislocation energies in relation with the p + 18R martensitic transformation in Cu-Zn-A1 alloys has been performed. Dislocations produced by macroscopic deformation of the parent or martensitic phase have been considered. The crystallographic changes of the dislocations upon transformation have been established and the anisotropic theory of dislocations has been used to calculate their energy when embedded in f 5 or martensite. Good agreement was found between the calculated separation of the partials and the corresponding line orientations for the minimum energy and the experimental results from transmission electron microscopy observations.
