Elaboration of conjugated polymer nanowires and nanotubes for tunable photoluminescence properties

Abstract: Prototypal photoluminescent nanofibres of poly-(p-phenylene-vinylene) (PPV) were prepared by the wetting template method in polycarbonate nanoporous membranes with an easy all-in solution polymer precursor route. Both nanowires and nanotubes were obtained by varying the dilution of the polymer precursor in methanol prior to thermal conversion. PPV nanotubes exhibit unique features, such as blue-shifted emission at 2.80 eV, higher quantum yield, and longer fluorescence lifetime with respect to PPV films. These … Show more

“…Today, the methods used to synthesize conjugated polymer (CP) NWs span from scanning probe lithography [Lim & Mirkin (2002)] and mechanical stretching [He et al (2001)] to electrospinning [Reneker (2000)] and templated electrochemical [Jerôme & Jerôme (1998) ;Martin (1994;] and wetting procedures [Massuyeau (2009)]. Intriguingly, while CPs present vast technological opportunities and can be easily combined to inorganic materials, hybrid metal-CP NWs have been scarcely studied [Gence (2007); Hernandez (2004); Park (2004)].…”

“…In our previous work, the PL results of PPV nanotubes exhibited higher quantum yield and longer lifetime as compared to that of bulk PPV fi lms; suggesting that those improved properties are attributed to the cancellation of interchain interactions. [ 46 ] With the combination of polarized PL and GI-FTIR results, a complete picture of nanoscale spatial effect can be acquired so as to add an isotropic feature for the chain behavior of PVE poly mer. As illustrated in Scheme 2 , PVE polymer chains are successfully pore-fi lled into the nanochannels from random chain confi guration by solvent annealing, and then anisotropic polymer chains parallel to the cylindrical direction of nanopores are induced due to the confi nement effect at which the dimension of the polymer chain is approximately half of the diameter of nanoporous PS template ( ∼ 20 nm).…”

“…Today, synthetic methods of CP-NWs include: scanning probe lithography [26], mechanical stretching [27], electrospinning [28], template electrochemical [29,30,31] and wetting procedures [32]. Recent improvements in the fabrication of PPy-NWs on polymeric surfaces have been researched [33] by soft techniques.…”
