Elaboration of antibiofilm surfaces functionalized with antifungal-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes

Abstract: To tackle the loss of activity of surfaces functionalized by coating and covalently bound molecules to materials, an intermediate system implying the noncovalent immobilization of active molecules in the inner cavity of grafted cyclodextrins (CDs) was investigated. The antifungal and antibiofilm activities of the most stable complexes of Anidulafungin (ANF; echinocandin) and thymol (THY; terpen) in various CDs were demonstrated to be almost the same as the free molecules. The selected CD was covalently bond to… Show more

“…It has been reported that CDs surface functionalized with polyethylene or polypropylene loaded with miconazole reduced C. albicans biofilm formation by 96% in vitro . Furthermore, gold surface functionalized CD grafted anidulafungin and thymol reduced the surface adherence of yeast and demonstrated fungicidal activity against C. albicans biofilms [204, 205]. Furthermore, at enhanced drug loading and retention, ciprofloxacin loaded CD-agar hydrogels showed broad antibacterial activity against S. aureus , S. epidermidis , P. aeruginosa , and E. coli and controlled drug release [206].…”

“…Preparation of M-Cys from native cyclosophoraoses M-Cys was synthesized based on the previous studies of methyl-b-cyclodextrin [33]. To a vigorously stirred suspension of Cys (500 mg, 0.16 mmol) and potassium hydroxide (898 mg, 16 mmol) in anhydrous THF (15 mL), dimethyl sulfate (2.12 mL, 22.4 mmol) was added.…”
