Elaboration and properties of low-cost ceramic microfiltration membrane from local Tunisian clay for wastewater treatment

Abstract: This study focused on the development and preparation of a microfiltration membrane, based on a low-cost natural Tunisian clay powder, deposited on macro-porous ceramic support. The deposit was made through a dip-coating technique, followed by a drying process and sintering at 700 °C. Results revealed that the obtained membrane was characterized by a good adhesion between the membrane layer and the ceramic support, an average pore diameter of 0.34 mm, and a porosity of 39%. This membrane was applied in the tre… Show more

“…In this way, becomes evident the increase of a search for alternative and viable sources from raw materials for membrane preparation. For over the years, low-cost membranes have been developed from a variety of raw materials, such as Sugarcane Bagasse [6] , Mullite [7] , Tunisian Clay [8] , Algerian kaolin [9] .…”

“…The porous support must provide mechanical resistance enough to avoid unexpected troubles in operation and, at the same time, must provide low resistance to gas flux [9,11,14]. Al 2 O 3 powder is the main raw material used in the production of the porous support [15], but other ceramic powders also can be employed, such as TiO 2 , SiO 2 , ZrO 2 , perovskite, mullite, cordierite [10,16], as well as non-oxide compounds (nitrides, carbides, and borides) [5], and clays [17,18]. Various processes are used to deposit the thin films onto the porous support, including spin coating, screen printing, and dip coating [19].…”

“…The great increase in the world population in the last decades, added to the growing development of new products and technologies, has generated a very great need for water consumption by the population in general, but by industries (CICEK, 2003). These high-water resources consumption leads to a large generation of wastewater contaminated with a variety of products, such as heavy metals, organic dyes, and inorganic residues (FIGUEIREDO et al, 2020;KAMOUN et al, 2020;KESKIN et al, 2021). A dye widely used in the textile industry is methylene blue (MB) (C 16 H 18 ClN 3 S), evaluated as a basic type of dye, with a heterocyclic aromatic molecular structure (ÖZACAR;ŞENGIL, 2003).…”
