This work reports the feasibility results of recycling sugar cane bagasse ash (SCBA) to produce glass-ceramic. The major component of this solid residue is SiO 2 (>89%). A 100 g batch composition containing ash, CaO and Na 2 O was melted and afterward, poured into water to produce a glass frit. The crystallization kinetic study by nonisothermal method was performed on powder samples (<63 μm) at five different heating rates. Wollastonite is the major phase in crystallization at T>970°C, and below this temperature there is a predominance of rankinite. The crystallization activation energies calculated by the Kissinger and Ligero methods are equivalent: 374±10 and 378±13 kJ/mol. The growth morphology parameters have equal values n=m=1.5 indicating that bulk nucleation is the dominant mechanism in this crystallization process, where there is a three-dimensional growth of crystals with polyhedronlike morphology controlled by diffusion from a constant number of nuclei. However, differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves on both monolithic and powder glass samples suggest that crystallization of the powder glass sample occurs through a surface mechanism.The divergence in both results suggests that the early stage of surface crystallization occurs through a three-dimensional growth of crystals, which will then transform to one-dimensional growth.

Se efectúa una somera descripción de los diferentes indicadores empleados por el Institute for Scientific Information( I.S.I) y en particular del Scientific Citation Index utilizados como parametros para evaluar la calidad de las revistas científicas, así como las limitaciones que presentan como indicadores de la calidad global de una revista. Se describe el proceso seguido por el Boletín de la Sociedad Española de Cerámica y Vidrio para su inclusión en el citado indice, y la evolución positiva experimentada por el factor de impacto a lo largo de los años. Esta evolución se inscribe dentro de la mejora global de indicadores del aún muy reducido número de revistas españolas, 30, que incorpora el Journal Citation Records. Se señalan algunas sugerencias que permitan asentar y mejorar la visibilidad de las revista científicas españolas Palabras clave. Some limitations to their use as global quality index was also indicated. The proccess issued by the Boletín de la Sociedad Española de Cerámica Y Vidrio to be included at the I.S.I and the positive evolution experimented was also described. Such change was inserted in the same positive tendency developped by the Spanish scientific journals, included in the Journal Citation Reports. Pero las revistas son también la vía por la que los investigadores obtienen un índice de la repercusión sus contribuciones al progreso científico. Además a lo largos de las dos ultimas décadas se ha ido generalizando en numerosos países el número y calidad de las publicaciones como elemento de evaluación de la carrera investigadora, de los sistemas retributivos y en la propia concesión de proyectos de investigación INDICADORES DE CALIDAD E IMPACTO DE LAS RE-VISTAS CIENTÍFICASEs lógico por tanto que los investigadores y los tecnólogos intenten publicar en las mejores revistas de su especialidad. The arc-plasma vitrification of a hospital wastes containing metals and inorganic oxides yields to a leachresistant glassy or vitreous slag, which can be environmentally safe for landfill disposal or could be transformed in glass-ceramic tiles with physical and mechanical properties similar to those showed by marketable products for building applications. Standard methods have been used for testing the leachability of elements from this new type of tiles. The water resistance was evaluated by the DIN 38414 S4 standard and the chemical durability of glass and glass-ceramics by the weight losses per surface unit, employing NaOH and HCl (5%) aqueous solutions, at boiling temperature. Results show that although glass-ceramic tiles are most water leachable than original plasma vitreous glass, the concentration of toxic minor elements in their leaching solutions are lower than those allowed by the Normative.
