El color del polvo urbano como indicador de contaminación por elementos potencialmente tóxicos: el caso de Ensenada, Baja California, México

Abstract: C ontamination by potentially toxic elements (PTE) is not periodically evaluated, given that the chemical analyses have a high cost. The ashes and combustion fumes give the ground a dark color, which could serve as a proxy indicator. In this study, a methodology was designed to prove the use of the color of urban dust as an indicator of contamination by PTE, and the most contaminated color was identified. 86 dust samples from Ensenada, Baja California were analyzed. The color of the samples was measured and th… Show more

“…Un estudio previo realizado en Ensenada revela que los polvos urbanos de color gris contienen mayores concentraciones de Pb, Cu, Zn y Ni (Cortés et al, 2015); sin embargo, no se realizó un análisis espacial, por lo que es necesario identificar las zonas de mayor contaminación con la idea de tomar acciones de remediación para proteger a la población.…”

“…A previous study in Ensenada reveals that gray urban dust has higher concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn and Ni (Cortés et al, 2015); however, a spatial analysis was not carried out, so it is necessary to identify the areas with higher pollution with the idea of taking remedial action to protect the population.…”

“…Urban dust is a heterogeneous mixture of local soil and dust from natural and anthropogenic sources (e.g., Cortés et al, 2015;Sánchez-Duque et al, 2015). A large portion of the dust is made up of PM 10 and smaller particles.…”

“…As is the case for soils, chemical analyses are costly: they need a large number of samples and may produce toxic byproducts. Besides magnetic methods, the use of colors of urban dust has been suggested by Cortés et al (2015); e.g., ashes and combustion fumes leave dark colors. An important aspect of the final color of dust is the pretreatment of the samples: sieving, homogenization and humidity content may alter their color (Cortés et al, 2015).…”
