Einstein-Æther Theory

Abstract: We review the status of "Einstein-AEther theory", a generally covariant theory of gravity coupled to a dynamical, unit timelike vector field that breaks local Lorentz symmetry. Aspects of waves, stars, black holes, and cosmology are discussed, together with theoretical and observational constraints. Open questions are stressed. * Based on a talk given by T. Jacobson at the Deserfest.

“…These theories can be thought of as low energy effective field theory descriptions of local Lorentz violation (LV) possibly arising from quantum gravitational physics at energies near the Planck scale. In this paper we study one of these models, "Einstein-aether" theory (or "ae-theory" for short) [24], in which a dynamical unit timelike vector field u a is coupled to gravity. The LV here is a sort of spontaneous symmetry breaking.…”

“…The dual 1-forms θ A form a natural basis of the vector space of 1-forms Ω (1) (T M ). In turn the 6 By smooth we mean here metrics of at least C 2 regularity. This will be relaxed to piecewise C 1 when we look at braneworlds, allowing for distributional matter sources.…”

“…In fact the fixed-point action will almost certainly not be the Einstein-Hilbert action but could instead be some general diffeomorphism invariant action with extra degrees of freedom affecting local Lorentz invariance (like for example the well studied Einstein-aether theory [27]). Furthermore, note that since the gravitons are massless, their propagation is not affected by (16).…”
